I’ve had the same hair stylist for the last 7 (7!) years. I always kid Nikki that she’s my longest relationship (well, sort of true). When I was 21 I got my hair chopped to my chin and it’s gone through various short lengths since then. After the break up last September, I started to grow my hair out (a slow and arduous process) and it’s finally (almost) to my shoulders (le sigh).
I love that I can put it in a teeny, tiny ponytail which I now dub “the comma”. But it is bothering me! I have a hair appointment tomorrow and I know that I’m not ready to go ultra short yet (I will one day, but I want it longer so that it’s a huge difference when I do), but I do know I need something different. I was thinking an angled bob, but then worried I wouldn’t have enough hair in the back for my beloved “comma”. My hair is very fine and pretty straight (pre-flattening iron), but it does get these little flips at the end – especially in this weather.
Me, at this very moment (pardon the blurry camera phone image):
Here are a few pics I printed to show Nikki. I’d love your input. Let me know if you have a favorite or feel free to send me a link to a pic in the comments section. Thanks!
This is what I’ve been attempting to do with my hair (minus the length). I want the straight across bangs, but once mine start growing, they sweep to the side so I think I have to abandon this dream and move on.
For the record, I am not a Paris fan, but I do happen to love her hairstyle in this pic.
I think I’ve brought a Katie pic with me the last 4 times I’ve gone to get my hair cut. She has gorgeous hair!
Her hair looks fine and wispy like mine so maybe (just maybe) this look is attainable for me.
Comments? Thoughts? Spill the beans!

While I think you totally have the look to sport an ultra short look, I’m thinking that if you really wanna grow it out you’ll have to opt for a less drastic cut by keeping longer layers for length and some added body. I have the same problem. I go between super short or growing it long (fine and thin haired people unite!). But I always get compliments on the length I have now and have opted to stay in this weird purgatory where on any given day I just wanna take scissors to my hair myself.

Mb, you kill me! I totally hear you on the inner voice telling you to “put the scissors down!!”. Thanks for your input!

Fun!!!!
I’m with Mb about keeping your commitment BUT if you decide to do something different, I vote for the square and funky bangs. The Paris photo is way too much like your current or recent haircuts.
I’m growing mine out, too. Ggrrrrrr.

I also like Paris’ haircut too, if you wanna keep it short. But for growing out, layers look great.
I was in a similar situation – I had shoulder-length awkward length hair and I knew going shorter would make it look a lot nicer. But I had short hair for over a year and really wanted to make a go of longer hair. I had lovely long hair before I cut it.
So to handle the growing out phase I got extensions.
Now, three months later, my extensions are out. My hair is not any longer and in fact is much thinner, to the point where I want to cry….huge patches of hair came out with the extensions.
So the moral of the story is…don’t get extensions! Embrace your natural hair. I know you didn’t say you wanted extensions but I just wish I embraced the shorter hair. Unfortunately I’m still trying to grow mine out – I’m tempted to cut it because my hair looks REALLY bad right now at this thin, damaged length but if I cut it it will negate the whole reason I got extensions in the first place.

Wanderlusting, I am so sorry! I actually considered the clip in extensions for fun nights out here and there. And then when I saw yours, I wanted the full monty – they looked so beautiful on you! Thank you for the warning and again, I’m so sorry about your hair. But at least you have a beautiful face – you’d look good bald, Lady!

I was just in a similar situation and chopped all my hair off. I brought in these two photos to show my stylist:

Now I have short hair, but short hair that I really, really like.
Good luck! I’m sure you’ll look swell, whatever you decide.

Thanks for the links, freckledk! Very cute bob! I was taken aback when I saw the blonde hair pic of Natalie though – she looks completely different!
